A natural organizer with a strong background in advocacy and coalition building...

That’s Frieda Edgette, Our Director

At Barbary Coast, Frieda has worked with nonprofits, schools, hospitals, businesses, trade associations, and renewable energy developers. Her “Leave No Stone Unturned” attitude makes Frieda’s track-record of fostering diverse and effective coalitions and comprehensive outreach efforts hard to match.

Prior to joining Barbary Coast, Frieda worked on more than 100 occupational safety campaigns in more than twenty states and provinces, assisting her clients with strategic planning, grassroots mobilization, coalition building, brand development, social marketing, GOTV, media relations and communication, and group facilitation – and her campaigns won.

As an elected delegate to the California State Democratic Central Committee and appointed member of the Alameda County Democratic Party, Frieda’s highly developed network includes many of the Bay Area’s movers and shakers. She also represents Berkeley, Piedmont, and parts of Oakland on the Alameda County Human Relations Commission and sits on the National Women’s Political Caucus-Alameda North Board. Being a third generation San Francisco native who transplanted to the East Bay (who would have thought!), Frieda leverages her relationships and professional skills to assist Barbary Coast’s clients on both sides of the Bay.

Frieda has a B.A. in Political Science and double minors in History and Women, Culture and Development from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During her studies, Frieda interned in our nation’s capital for the National Coalition for History, and studied in South Africa.

During the rare moments she is separated from her BlackBerry, Frieda enjoys being in the great outdoors, practicing Afro-Brazilian dance, catching up on Bay Area blogs, and traveling locally and beyond with her husband.

Through kiva.org, all Barbary Coast employees make interest-free microloans to people in need around the world. Frieda’s Kiva partner is Aya Rose. Living in Juba, Sudan, Rose is a 29-year old mother of three who is married to a nurse who has worked at a teaching hospital for five years. Rose sells maize flour at the market and hopes to open a shop as a point of sale for the flour. She also hopes to build a house.
